Nueva Prosperina Building Project

Trips temporarily Suspended due to unrest and violence in Guayaquil

We continue to sponsor projects

Since 2015 Nomads of Hope has been working with our local leadership team to address the housing needs of the community. Nueva Prosperina is a barrio located in the Northeast of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Due to the continuing unrest we are unable to safely bring volunteers into the community. However, the need continues and we continue to sponsor projects.

Project Description

Goals

With the strong leadership in-place in Nueva Prosperina our goals are to continue funding projects. So far we have been able to fund projects each year despite not being able to safetly bring volunteers into the community

The Work

Building projects include small and large scale construction on private homes. Projects include: bathrooms, roofs, floors, reinforcing walls and other building projects.

Living Conditions

When we are able to bring volunteers into the community they live with families in their homes during their time in Nueva Prosperina.

Weather

The weather in Nueva Prosperina, Guyaquil is hot and humid.  It is usually cloudy but the sun is very storg with high UV indexes. Heavy rain falls every day from the end of January through March. It is generally dry in the summer months.

Cultural Considerations

The people of Nueva Prosperina are warm, welcoming and generous. Once you stay with a family you will become part of their family. Ecuador is predominantly a catholic country. In Nueva Prosperina there is a significant evangelical Christian community. There are often parties happening around the barrio. It can be very noisy. There are lots of street dogs.

Exploration Opportunities

Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador.  It is an important economic center with a large port. Guayaquil has many museums and cultural venues.  The Malecon is a beautiful promenade on the river with many oportunities to try local cuisine and stroll along the enclosed park.  There is a big ferris wheel and an aerial gondola.

Language Skills

Ecuador is a Spanish speaking country.  If you speak Spanish or know a little you will be able to comminicate with your host family on a deeper level. But, you do not need to Speak any Spanish for this to be a richly rewarding experience.

Health

It is not safe to drink the tap water.  You must be careful to always use bottled or boiled water.  You should not drink beverages with ice cubes. Vegetables and fruits need to be washed.

Check with your health care provider about the need for vacinations. It is a good idea to have medication like Cipro in case of gastrointestinal issues.

You must purchase travel insurance for your trip.

Safety

Nueva Prosperina is a dangerous barrio. The murder rate is among the highest in Ecuador. Kidknappings and other crime is common along with petty theft.  Never walk alone in Nueva Prosperina and always let someone know when and where you will be going. Do not bring anything that you cannot afford to lose. Keep your passport and other valuables in your family’s home.

Documentation

As a North American or European citizen you will automatically be granted a 90 day tourist visa upon entry into Ecuador.  You will need your passport.  Currently there is no Covid-19 proof of vacination requirement.
