Nueva Prosperina Building Project

Trips temporarily Suspended due to unrest and violence in Guayaquil

We continue to sponsor projects

Since 2015 Nomads of Hope has been working with our local leadership team to address the housing needs of the community. Nueva Prosperina is a barrio located in the Northeast of Guayaquil, Ecuador. Due to the continuing unrest we are unable to safely bring volunteers into the community. However, the need continues and we continue to sponsor projects.

Project Description

Goals

With the strong leadership in-place in Nueva Prosperina our goals are to continue funding projects.

The Work

Building projects include small and large scale construction on private homes. Projects include: bathrooms, roofs, floors, reinforcing walls and other building projects.

Living Conditions

When volunteers join us on a work trip, they are given the extraordinary opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the lives of local families residing in Nueva Prosperina. This immersive experience entails living with these families in their homes, allowing our volunteers to gain a deep understanding of the living conditions in the community.

Weather

Guayaquil has a tropical savanna climate. From January to April, the city experiences hot, humid weather with heavy rainfall, particularly during El Niño years, which can cause flooding. However, from May to December, the Humboldt Current cools the area, resulting in minimal rainfall, cloudy mornings and afternoons, and evening breezes.

Cultural Considerations

The people of Nueva Prosperina are known for their warm and welcoming nature, always embracing visitors as part of their own family. As a predominantly Catholic country, Ecuador is home to a significant evangelical Christian community, adding to the diverse cultural tapestry of Nueva Prosperina. The barrio often comes alive with vibrant festivities, creating a lively atmosphere that can be lively and bustling at times.

Exploration Opportunities

On our Tuesday free afternoon and evening our group will explore the center of Guayaquil. Guayaquil is the largest city in Ecuador and an economic powerhouse with a bustling port. We will leave the barrio and head to a large indigenous market where you can find some great deals on unique crafts.  After that we will visit the breathtaking Malecon, a picturesque riverside promenade offering a delightful blend of local cuisine and serene park walks. Indulge in thrilling experiences like riding the grand ferris wheel or taking a ride on the mesmerizing Aerovia, an aerial gondola that provides sweeping views of the city.

Language Skills

Ecuador is a Spanish speaking country.  If you speak Spanish or know a little you, will be able to comminicate with your host family on a deeper level. But, you do not need to speak any Spanish for this to be a richly rewarding experience.

Health

When traveling to Guayaquil, Ecuador, North Americans should consider the following health precautions:

1. Vaccinations: Ensure that routine vaccinations are up-to-date, and consult with your healthcare provider about the need for additional shots such as hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, and yellow fever.

2. Malaria prevention: Guayaquil has a risk of malaria. Consult with a doctor about taking prescription antimalarial drugs and use insect repellent, long sleeves, and pants to avoid mosquito bites.

3. Food and water safety: Stick to bottled water and avoid ice cubes. Eat well-cooked foods and avoid raw or undercooked meats, seafood, and eggs. Be cautious with street food and unpasteurized dairy products.

4. Sun protection: Guayaquil’s climate is hot and humid. Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect against sunburn and heat exhaustion.

Safety

Nueva Prosperina is a barrio in Guayaquil, Ecuador, that faces significant safety challenges. The area has one of the highest homicide rates in the country, and residents and visitors must exercise extreme caution. Violent crimes, such as kidnappings and armed robberies, occur frequently, while petty theft is also common.

To minimize risks, it is crucial never to walk alone in Nueva Prosperina, especially at night or in poorly lit areas. Always inform a trusted friend or family member of your whereabouts and expected return time. When staying in the barrio, carry only essential items and avoid bringing valuables or large sums of money. It is advisable to leave your passport and other important documents in a secure location at your family’s home.

Documentation

North American and European citizens are granted a 90-day tourist visa upon arrival in Ecuador. To ensure a smooth entry process, travelers must present a valid passport with at least six months remaining before expiration. It is essential to verify the passport’s validity well in advance of the trip to allow sufficient time for renewal if necessary.

At present, Ecuador does not require proof of COVID-19 vaccination for entry. However, it is crucial to note that travel requirements can change rapidly in response to global health situations. Before departing, travelers should consult official sources, such as the Ecuadorian embassy or consulate in their home country, to obtain the most up-to-date information on entry requirements and health measures.

In addition to meeting entry requirements, travelers are encouraged to take precautionary steps to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip. These may include familiarizing oneself with local laws and customs, and staying informed about current health advisories and security situations in Ecuador.
